Monday
This morning Mrs Hogan's Year One class presented a wonderful prayer assembly examining the creation story. We returned to class and used a Venn diagram to compare the Fraser island creation story to Genesis 1 and were amazed at the similarities. In Maths we revised angles and students created three mini golf courses to demonstrate their knowledge of acute, right and obtuse angles. In Science we learnt about insulators and conductors and discussed how materials have properties that make them useful for different purposes. In English we examined the second paragraph of the resolution in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and watched a clip from the movie. We blogged our thoughts about gratitude in response to an Ekert Tolle quotation. Thank you to the students who have returned their sponsor money from the Spelling Bee, please bring it in tomorrow if you haven't.

Tuesday
This morning the class prayed to a hymn, 'Here I am Lord' and discussed John the Baptist. In Religion we explored the time line of the Bible and discussed when aboriginals started their creation stories. In Maths, we then explored angles further and used protractors to measure acute, obtuse and right angles. After watching a clip on scale, we discussed how maps and scale drawings are proportional to real places and things. Students then worked in the text and on IXL to calculate scale. After handwriting, the class enjoyed learning about tints and shades. In Science we explored conductors and insulators in more detail and did a quiz as a class. After lunch, the class enjoyed a chapter from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The class practiced ball games and then we finished the day with a game of bullrush on the oval.

Wednesday
This morning the students prayed with Mandelas. Mandalas are an ancient form of art and meditation. The word means circle or centre and the patterns or geometric designs in mandalas can be used to make any sort of colourful design or image. The purpose of mandalas is to aid our reflection, to centre us and still us, by using the creative rather than the analytical part of our brains and personality. In English the class developed their own chocolate bars, as well as an ad or another way of marketing them. For example, a student designed a chocolate bar that looked like several balloons tied together, but tasted lighter than air. The class was very creative and invented chocolate that causes the consumer to grow a moustache chocolate, to chocolate that glowed in the dark and gave you superhero powers. The class enjoyed the presentation from the GCCC on "Wipe out waste". Lucy the presenter spoke about recycling and reducing landfill. In Science the class completed an experiment called "Keeping it warm". We examined the effect of different materials on the temperature of warm water. We learned that wool is a better insulator than metal. Metal is a good conductor of heat. Students used thermometers and recorded results in a table. We enjoyed the help from two work experience students. The class then finished their tint and shade collages. After lunch we looked at the characters from the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but as the video wasn't working we went to the oval to practice ball games.

Thursday
This morning the children embraced meditation. They finished colouring their Mandalas while listening to the next chapter from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We revisited that a graph organises, represents and summarises information so that patterns and relationships can be identified The class graphed the results from yesterdays science experiment and we summarised what a conductor and an insulator is. After morning tea the class enjoyed the obstacle course as the culminating activity from the Survivor unit. Then students were rewarded with the final piece of their map and were able to find the treasure. After lunch the class joined 4 Blue and watched the original version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

It was overwhelming this morning when parents came to say a special goodbye. Thank you for all your kind words and beautiful gifts. After prayer the children were the teachers. Students stepped up to the challenge to teach in pairs a topic from each unit in Maths. It was an excellent revision of the semester. We then visited the library for borrowing books for the holidays. The class was excited to join 4 Blue for the rest of the movie of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Enjoy a safe and wonderful holiday. Remember to complete some Study ladder activities. See you next semester. You have all left footprints on my heart!

Friday
This morning we watched a song on bullying and discussed how important it is to recognise how other people may be feeling, to show care and compassion and to include and tolerate others even if they are different.
The class should be very proud of themselves. I think this week was the best spelling results the class has achieved and so much money was raised for Rosies. Students have their spelling test and sponsor card and it would be great if the money could be returned as soon as possible in order to total and give to Mr. Boulton for him to present the swags to Rosies.
Students presented History information reports. These were excellent and the improvement made in presenting skills is commendable. I noticed much more eye contact and children projecting their voices compared to the Garden Buddy presentations.
We visited the Library and enjoyed a powerful story, a picture book, about leaving one place and starting anew. The class started to make 3 D signs for their desk so Mr Bloxsidge will find it easy to learn names.
Congratulations to Sienna and Shari who received the Mercy Quality awards this week, well done girls. We finished the week with a game of touch footy on the oval.
There will be no homework for the last week of school but I have set many Study ladder activities and have requested each students completes at least five over the holidays. Enjoy a safe and happy weekend.

We revised the Trinity and talked about the historical formation of the Trinity and how over many hundreds of years theologians have discussed God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The students remembered how St. Patrick used the Shamrock to describe the Trinity. We read the Book Week shortlisted book and discussed the descriptive language including similes, metaphors and the use of alliteration. In Maths the class learnt that a variable is a symbol that stands for a number. We used algebraic expressions to find numbers (see below), then worked on IXL.
After morning tea the class practised spelling then had a comprehension test. We studied the next paragraph of the exposition (a style of writing to argue or persuade a case for or against a particular point of view) on Bicycle Safety. In History students learnt about women's roles and we read a book about Aboriginals living at Uluru. In Geography we discussed fossil fuels and talked about greenhouse gases. The class is organising lunchtime activities for Environment day on the 5th June and we are collecting recycleable rubbish to make art with. Students then worked on their Geography information report.

Monday
This morning at the Church Assembly, Robyn Hunt form Rosies spoke passionately about the importance of Rosies. Robyn described how because Rosies aims to provide something intangible, they offer a range of services to their patrons, all with the aim of creating a sense of 'home' in different places. They aim to be present with people, offering them times of unconditional belonging. Rosies’ most visible outreach is the street van. They operate street vans which offer tea, coffee, Milo and a friendly ear in all our locations: Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture, Logan/Beenleigh, Cairns, Mareeba, Toowoomba and Ipswich. Most of the volunteers work with the street van, spending time with people who are homeless and often also houseless.
We returned to class to acknowledge National Sorry Day, an annual day of commemoration and remembrance of all those who have been impacted by the government policies of forcible removal that have resulted in the Stolen Generations. In Maths, students practised times tables then we learnt the order of the factors in a multiplication problem does not change the product. After morning tea, in English, the class worked on the new exposition piece on bicycle safety. There were many beautiful smiles for the school photos. We returned to class to work on the science experiment on the solubility of various inks. The class revised what makes a Fair Test. After lunch students researched their geography and history reports.

This morning the class prayed to this beautiful image of the patroness of Australia which hangs in St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. Our Lady Help of Christians painting is of Mary focused completely on the child Jesus who is the centre of this work, and the centre of our focus – our saviour. Also included in this painting are typical Australian symbols -the Southern Cross in the night sky, a garland of wattles and Australian landscape as a background which has been inspired by the works of Australian artists such as Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts. The students then completed maths testing on Multiplication, Division and Location and Transformation. After morning tea the class had specialist lessons with Music, Sport, Library and Italian.

This morning in prayer we acknowledged the feast day of Saint Bernadine. He crisscrossed Italy on foot, preaching for hours at a time, several times a day. His special devotion was to the Holy Name of Jesus. The class worked hard completing a Maths test on Addition, Subtraction and Time. In English we examined the next five spelling words and read in detail the second paragraph of the exposition 'Nerdlihc'. Students worked on their geography 'in class' report and also on the Science information report. We read the story Uno's Garden and talked about the effects of cutting down forests on wildlife. Book club forms were sent home this afternoon and also The Premier's Reading Challenge forms, please use these instead of the reading log in your homework book to note any books your child has read. Good luck to Loren and Lucy who are competing at District Cross Country tomorrow, and also best wishes to Kokoro who is attending the Gateways program. Year 4 is very excited about the visit to Metricon stadium for the SHINE carnival tomorrow. Remember to wear sports uniform and to bring your lunch, water bottle, hat, raincoat, jumper and to wear sunscreen.

Monday
This morning Mr. Riddell's Year 2 class presented a wonderful Church assembly about
Our Lady Help of Christians. This is a significant feast in Australia, because in 1844 the bishops nominated Mary as a special patron of Australia. We returned to class for a Maths test on Place value and Rounding. We then revised surveys and graphs and the class had another quiz on Data and Graphs. In English we learnt that an exposition is a type of writing that is used to inform, describe or explain a topic. It attempts to persuade the reader. The class enjoyed 'Ten Reasons to Visit Nerdlihc'. We learnt the first five spelling words from the text and children worked on publishing their complication. In Science we discussed as a class properties of ink and talked about why children's art paint should be non-toxic and water-soluble. The class then identified properties in other materials like nail polish, face paint and highlighter ink. In Geography we read 'The Lorax' and discussed the effects on the environment from manufacturing 'Thneedles'.

Wednesday
This morning we practised the Mass followed by spelling and Reading to Learn. In Maths today students learnt how to relate units of time. 1 week = 7 days, 1 day = 24 hours, 1 hour = 60 minutes. How many hours are in 5 hours and 10 minutes? Many students still need to work on their times tables. Squeebles Times Tables is a great App for practise. In Science we discussed the properties of more materials and the students handled various gloves and had to annotate a diagram and note the type of material and the material's properties. The students completed a listening test on the SHINE program. After a practise in the Church, we met our buddies to make Mother's Day cards. Remember homework is due tomorrow.

Thursday
This morning being the 1st May, we prayed for the Blessed Virgin Mary and our own mother's. After spelling, the class completed a dictation. In maths students further examined how time can be measured in different units. We watched a clip on units of time and discussed how we can tell which is longer 63 hours or 3 days. We used multiplication to convert days to months and multiplied 3 X 24 = 72 So 3 days or 72 hours is longer. The class went to the Church for a dress rehearsal with Mr. Boulton's feedback. We would love to see you there tomorrow morning at 9am. Bike Safety permission slips were handed out this afternoon for the excursion to Ashmore PCYC next Wednesday, sports uniforms are to be worn. There is a spelling and maths test tomorrow.

Easter Tuesday - Earth Day
Welcome back! This morning for Earth Day we went outside to pray and appreciated nature. Students wrote a prayer, sketched or listed things in nature they were thankful for. We returned to the classroom to discuss Holy Week and talked about the 14 Stations of the Cross. The class reflected on their Lenten promises. In Maths we examined fact families of addition and subtraction. We watched a clip, worked from the Envision text and completed questions on a practise sheet. After morning tea the class started a new Science unit on Materials. We discussed the different properties of materials and watched a video by Bill Nye the Science Guy on Materials and learnt about the process and uses of paper, glass and concrete. In groups students designed four drinking cups made our of different materials and listed the positives and negatives of each. In History the class enjoyed learning about Aboriginal History and Lake Mungo. We discussed Aboriginal legends and watched a couple of stories on the Dust Echoes website, http://www.abc.net.au/dustechoes/dustEchoesFlash.htm We learnt that aboriginal stories exist to:
• teach young people about natural events
• warn them about dangers
• explain relationships and identity
• teach them about the law and right behaviour
Homework will be given out Thursday and due next Thursday.

Wednesday
This morning we enjoyed a liturgy on Easter about Jesus rising from the dead to save us. Mrs. Bleakley was kind enough to come to the classroom to educate us about the importance of always wearing a bike helmet when riding even when camping because of Fletcher's terrible accident. The class then examined and reflected on the Stations of the Cross.
http://www.cptryon.org/prayer/child/stations/01.html
In Maths (see below) we examined the relationship between division and multiplication. After morning tea we read a wonderful book about the properties of Materials. Students then wrote their own list of clues about properties of a material and quizzed a partner: "My material is transparent, it can shatter, it is waterproof. What is it? It is glass". We then went to the oval for a race that wasn't fair, variables included different distances, different numbers on team, different amount of clothes to wear. This demonstrated the need for results to be reliable the test must be fair. We returned to class to learn abut controlled variables, independent variables and dependent variables (Cows Moo Softly - Change one thing, Measure or observe another, keep every else the Same). The class watched more of the clip from Bill Nye the Science Guy about Rubber and Steel and their properties and uses. After lunch we enjoyed hearing about Kokoro's exciting adventure to Nara in Japan. We then learnt about the Rainbow Serpent, a legend in Aboriginal History.

After praying an Act of Contrition and saying sorry for things we have done wrong, the class enjoyed great Garden Buddy presentations from Fletcher and Ethan. After another Times Tables practise, we examined how we can use compass directions to locate objects. We looked on google earth to find landmarks north of our school and cities south of our school. Students worked on IXL and then completed a symmetry test. In Science we revised the ways seeds are spread and watched a clip (http://www.mbgnet.net/bioplants/seed.html). After morning tea, the class worked on handwriting and then together we wrote a joint construction of the third character description in the orientation of The Fantastic Mr. Fox, students created their own and then worked on publishing their narratives. For Religion students worked on which deed they would do for their 'Lenten Tree Deed' and then wrote in their prayer journal. In Survivor groups are working well on different challenges. After lunch we were supposed to meet our grade one buddies but it was cancelled so instead the class worked on a stained glass picture of Jesus while Mrs West read from James and the Giant Peach. We then talked about cyber safety and watched an episode from cyberquolls (http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/cyberquoll/html/menu.html).

Tuesday
A busy day in 4 Green. After watching a video on "Deng" a man from Sudan and seeing what life was like for him, and how CARITAS has helped him, we gave thanks for the opportunities we have in our lives. The children embraced meditation. Zach presented a well prepared Garden Buddy presentation. The class then wrote more on their orientations and we discussed narrative structure after a joint rewrite. After morning tea students had an 8 X tables test. We revised symmetry and 3 Dimensional shapes. We worked as a class correcting worksheets then students worked on IXL and finished and symmetry art. In Science the class summarised their thinking about plants. We talked about the lifecycle of plants and what germination, pollination and fertilisation is. After lunch we worked on a Lenten tree and students are challenged to do a kind deed everyday during Lent. Students finished the day with some work on Survivor.
Well done to the group that attended Maths Club, today we worked through some questions off the ACER test and examined number patterns and two step operations.

This morning we attending the Church Assembly on Leadership and witnessed the year 6 students receive a blessing and make their pledge. We returned to the class for fantastic Garden Buddy presentations from Kaye, Maddison and Therese. In English we completed some dictation of spelling words, then completed a joint rewrite of the orientation in Fantastic Mr. Fox. In Maths, we revised symmetry and worked on relating 2 dimensional shapes and 3 dimensional objects (see below) in the Envision text. After watching a clip and a powerpoint on symmetry, we worked on symmetry in study ladder, then completed another symmetry art piece with our names. We returned to class for handwriting then in Science we talked about plant lifecycles and revised the parts of a plant. We dissected the fruit of a lemon and drew a cross section, labelling seeds, flesh, stem and skin.

Thursday - Library books tomorrow!
For prayer we prayed a Lenten prayer and made a small sign of the cross on our eyes, ears, hearts, shoulders, hands and feet. The class enjoyed a fantastic Garden Buddy presentation from James. In Reading to Learn we deconstructed the third part of the orientation and played some spelling games. We learnt if there is a vowel followed by the letter "l", we need to double the "l" before adding an ending: travel becomes travelling, jewel becomes jewellery. After morning tea the children had specialist lessons with Music, Sport, Library and Italian. This afternoon we discussed the ACER test for Maths is tomorrow morning. Mrs West explained the homework for next week. Remember library books for tomorrow.

Ash Wednesday
This morning the class completed a passage about Ash Wednesday after a class discussion and then wrote their Lenten promise. Loren presented a very well prepared Garden Buddy presentation. In Maths we examined arrays of 3, 6 and 9 and then played 8 X tables bingo. Well done to Fletcher and Jarvis on winning the game. After morning tea the Year Seven's came to our class to pray and distribute ashes. In Reading to Learn we read the second part of the orientation of Fantastic Mr Fox. We talked about grammar and spelling rules. In Science students measured their bean plant and some planted theirs in soil. Other students finished off questions on pollination. After lunch Mrs West read some more of the novel, James and the Giant Peach and students identified similes and adverbs and adjectives. The class then excitedly met their Year One buddies. We completed a 2D shape exercise with the buddies to make a character. Remember homework is due tomorrow.

Tuesday
Thank you to the families who supported the Shrove Tuesday breakfast this morning. We learnt that Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving, when the faithful confessed their sins to the local priest and received forgiveness before the Lentern season began. Lent starts tomorrow on Ash Wednesday. Mr Boulton visited our classroom and talked more about Lent. Abbey presented a well prepared Garden Buddy talk and then the class enjoyed deconstructing the orientation from Fantastic Mr. Fox and making new sentences. In Science students put the lifecycle of a tomato plant in order and explained the importance of pollination and why plants grow fruit. In Maths the class worked on 4 and 8 digit arrays and used the double strategy to find answers. We had online times tables practise and Fletcher and Kokoro are leading the class. Students worked on IXL and sumdog. After eating lunch many students came to the room for Maths Club. Mrs West worked with students in a group targeting areas they need help with while other students practised skills on IXL and played Sumdog. After lunch the class worked on Survivor challenges and before going home talked about the Lenten promises students would make tomorrow. If anyone is interested in student banking please get an application form from Mrs West.

Monday
3 Blue led a wonderful prayer assembly on the beginning of Lent. The students talked about change. We returned to class for some handwriting while the people presenting Garden Buddy presentations got organised. Well done to Shaylee, Matthew and Sam for such well prepared presentations. The class then completed a comprehension quiz and examined another orientation in a narrative. This week we are deconstructing The Fantastic Mr. Fox, also by Roald Dahl. In Maths we began a new topic on multiplication and talked about arrays. The class watched a clip and completed a practise sheet on changing addition sentences into multiplication sentences. We chanted the 8 times tables and students were given a password for Sumdog, an online maths game site. In Science we measured the bean plant growth and revised pollination before moving on to fruits. As you can see some bean plants are growing faster than others. What could be the reason for this? We watched a couple of clips on what is a fruit and how seeds are dispersed. After lunch Mrs West read from James and the Giant Peach and then students worked on their Survivor challenges. Remember it is Shrove Tuesday tomorrow and the pancake breakfast starts at 7:15am.

Friday
This morning we prayed a Hail Mary in rounds then watched a CARITAS, Project Compassion clip about how CARITAS helps people in the slums in Sao Paulo in Brazil. We worked on the 10 commandment posters. The class had a maths test on addition and subtraction with regrouping. We worked on iMovie to import our 'green screen' pictures, in order to 'green screen' remember to turn on advanced tools in your iMovie preferences. After morning tea the class had a spelling test. We worked on the homophones 'they're, there and their' and watched a video to explain when to use it then as a class answered some questions on the correct use. In Science, the class measured their bean seed growth and reflected on the lifecycle of a plant. Brianna's bean plant is over 29cm! After a visit to the Library to borrow books the class worked on their survivor challenges. Mrs West read some more from James and the Giant Peach. After lunch we had the assembly, congratulations to Sam who received the Mercy Quality award. Outstanding students this week include Georgie, Devlin, Caitlin, Shaylee, Charlie and Kaye. Homework books were handed back with the new homework sheet. Enjoy a happy weekend, this is your last weekend to indulge for a while as Lent begins on Wednesday.

Thursday
This morning we prayed a mantra. A mantra is a single word or short phrase that the person repeats throughout the meditation period. The word mantra is Sanskrit, but also now a recognised English word (Oxford English Dictionary); it means ‘that which clears the mind.’ The mantra helps us clear our mind of distractions. The result is increased focus and attention on God within. We prayed "Maranatha" and meditated on this word which means "Come Lord" (cf. 1 Cor 16:22 and Rev 22:20) for a minute before praying for the class. After exciting Garden Buddy presentations from Charlie, Georgie and Devlin, we worked on 3 Digit Subtraction (see below for explanation). In Reading to Learn we deconstructed the third paragraph of the orientation in James and the Giant Peach. We discussed comparatives and superlatives. Abbey, Charlie and Kokoro demonstrated to the class 'small, smaller and smallest' students compared to Mrs West. We examined the homework for next week and homework books were returned. After morning tea the class enjoyed specialist lessons with Music, Sport, Library and Italian.
Remember banking and library books for tomorrow.

Tuesday - Happy Birthday Charlie
After morning prayer the class enjoyed a fantastic and truly well prepared Garden Buddy presentation from Shari. Her Birds of Paradise flowers were taller than her! In Religion we discussed the 10 commandments (the decalogue). The class listened to chapter 20 of the book of Exodus and then worked in pairs to create poster of each commandment. In maths we subtracted using a hundreds chart. After morning tea in Reading to Learn, the class identified nouns, adverbs and adjectives in the orientation of the narrative and then cut out sentences, then words and rearranged them. In Science the class recorded the growth of their bean plant. After lunch students worked in their survivor teams and we read another chapter from James and the Giant Peach. Book Club brochures and Caritas boxes went home today.

Monday - Happy Birthday Shaylee for yesterday
This morning we enjoyed 4 Red's Prayer Assembly on Quality Relationships which examined the South African philosophy of Unbuntu or human kindness. We returned to class to listen to Lucy's Garden Buddy presentation. What a beautiful garden! The class then started a unit on subtraction. After watching a clip on regrouping we worked as a class from the text. In Reading to Learn we discussed the stages of a narrative and focused on the orientation. We identified the phases in the orientation of Roald Dahl's 'James and the Giant Peach'. We learnt what a preposition is (they describe a relationship between other words in a sentence) and students enjoyed making paper planes then flying them and writing a sentence using a prepositional phrase. My plane flew under the desk. We wrote more sentences with prepositional phrases and watched a School House Rock clip on prepositions. After lunch we identified parts of a flower then dissected a lily flower and counted the 'petals', 'stamens' and labelled the parts of the 'pistil'. Brianna, Yasmin, Shaylee, Sam and Shari are rostered for tomorrow for Garden Buddy presentations.

Friday - Happy Birthday Kaye
This morning we prayed for Church leaders and talked about St. Peter, the first pope. In Literacy we had a comprehension test and students worked on their narratives. The class went to the green room to pose for photos for the postcards. We returned for the spelling test. In Science we talked about pollination and watched a clip "The pollination rock" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5yya4elRLw). Students recorded the growth of the radicle and plumule in their seed. After morning tea we discussed addition of three or more numbers and watched a maths clip. The class were excited to work on the new macbook airs that have been added to the class set of computers. Some students worked in their text while some worked on IXL, a maths program we have subscribed to that is aligned with the Australian curriculum and then we swapped. The class went to the library to borrow books. After lunch was the assembly, Mr Boulton payed Advance Australia Fair on his guitar. Congratulations to Matthew who was awarded the Mercy Quality award for Quality Relationships. This week many students demonstrated outstanding behaviour. Well done Brianna, Yasmin, Matthew, Ethan, Koko, Charlie, Fletcher and Maddison. There is a link to Garden Buddy information and the timetable your child is rostered on the link under Garden Buddy. We said goodbye to Mitchell who is travelling to Thailand for two weeks and wish him a safe and exciting trip. Enjoy a happy weekend.

Thursday
After prayer, the class sat a Place Value assessment, some students are still having problems writing numbers in digits (write 'one hundred and sixty-seven thousand, four hundred and nine') and digits in words (write 3002 in words). Students worked on their narratives, practised their spelling and then for Science we examined the seed growth and then explored the parts of a flower. We learnt there are male (the anther and the filament make up the stamen) and female parts ( the stigma, style and the ovary make up the pistil or carpel). Tomorrow we examine pollination then next week we will dissect a flower. The class enjoyed specialist lessons after morning tea with Music, Library, Sport and Italian. Homework due tomorrow. Next weeks homework is online. Remember your library books!

Wednesday
For prayer this morning we enjoyed Psalm 23, 'The Lord is my shepard'. We talked about the meaning of the Psalm and Fletcher correctly explained that a Psalm is a song of praise. We started on adding 3 whole numbers in maths and watched a clip on regrouping. The class went to the oval for munch and crunch to work on their team work and to turn a circle of linked hands facing inwards to outwards with breaking the link. Congratulations 4 Green. Students then worked on a practice sheet and then we corrected the sums as a class. Liam shared a story about his lizard and we examined the skin it had shed. After morning tea students worked on their postcards and narratives. ‘Little Bird Tales’ was set up and students are publishing their work. ‘Little Bird Tales’ is an online story book that uses your own artwork, photographs, text, and voice. The class examined their seeds and Abbey's was the first to sprout. We learnt it is the Radicle or root that pushes through the seed coat first. We read another chapter of James and the Giant Peach and talked about similes. The class then worked on their survivor challenges. Remember the Maths test is tomorrow!

Tuesday
After a 4 minute meditation, the class worked with MAB blocks to demonstrate their knowledge of regrouping and addition with 3 digit numbers. We had a timed times tables test. In Science students enjoyed a video explaining what is a living thing and we read a book about seeds. We are going to start a class seed collection so if you find an interesting seed please bring it in. Garden Buddy Forms were sent home. We will start the Garden Buddy presentations on Monday (see below for the roster). After morning tea the class enjoyed a chapter from James and the Giant Peach. We then revised Adverbs and played a game and had a quiz on the structure of a Recount. The class did a look, cover, write, check and finished off their postcards and worked on their narratives. After lunch students worked on their handwriting then worked on their Survivor challenges. We talked about caring and including all group members.

Monday
This morning 4 Green exceeded all expectations and moved in two quiet lines to the Church and showed reverence and respect in a sacred place. We enjoyed the Year 5 Green assembly on Quality Relationships and returned to class to revisit Mental Maths. Most students grasp that there are strategies for doing maths in your head and two of these strategies are bridging and partitioning (see explanation last Friday). After revising our 4 times tables we reflected on the novel The Burnt Stick and wrote some responses to the text. After morning tea the class revisited the structure of a recount and students worked on their postcards. In Science we spoke about living things and students wrote if they thought a seed was living or nonliving, tomorrow we are exploring this further. The class then used a table to compare the shape, colour, texture, size and smell of the outside and inside of a bean seed. After lunch the class worked on challenge 2 of survivor.

Friday
This morning we read from The Corinthians 12:4-8 "Love is patient and kind.." We prayed a Valentine's Day prayer and contemplated those we love in our life. We watched a music clip about how Jesus loves us then we made a pop up card for our parents. Mrs West gave out glow sticks with a note about how the students make her heart glow. In Maths we started a new unit in Maths, Mental Math Strategies, about using strategies for addition, including bridging (making 10) and partitioning. In Reading Learn we revisited Recounts, deconstructed another postcard and talked about editing our work. The class had their weekly spelling test. Students then decided on where in the world they would like to write a postcard form and started their own. In Religion we learnt that a Psalm is a song of praise and we examined Psalm 148 and illustrated a line from the Psalm that resonated with us. After lunch was the assembly, congratulations to Oakley and Georgie who were awarded the Mercy Quality Award for Quality Relationships. Kokoro, Devlin and Mitchell were outstanding this week and won prizes from the prize box, well done! Homework was handed out today. Enjoy your weekend and Happy Valentine's Day!

Tuesday
This morning students took turns in praying the Lord's prayer while we contemplated the gifts God has blessed us with.We reflected on yesterday's assembly and wrote about Mercy Qualities in our Religion books. After a rounding game on the interactive white board, we worked through the Envision text. In Science, students completed the first column of a TWHL chart on plant life cycles (What we think we know, What we want to learn, What we learned, How we know). The class then labelled plant parts. After morning tea we continued with the Reading to Learn program and deconstructed the text and examined the spelling words. Students wrote their own recount based on the example text. After lunch the Survivor groups continued on their first group challenge and began the word search. It is interesting to see the groups that have bonded well and those groups that are learning resilience when decision making proves challenging. Remember to practise saying your larger numbers (for example: say 24 011 537).

Wednesday
This morning after prayer, we discussed how there are different types of prayer. We wrote a prayer of gratitude in our prayer journal. While several factors go into emotional resilience and optimism, studies show that cultivating a sense of gratitude can help you maintain a more positive mood in daily life and contribute to greater emotional well-being and bring social benefits as well. Students practised their spelling. We then talked about Narratives and listened to an adaptation on Cinderella, called Alex and the Glass Slipper. We discussed adjectives and students then wrote an introduction to their own Fairy Tale based on the story of Cinderella. After morning tea students worked on 'greater than and less than' activities in Math. For Science, the class detailed their ideas and prior knowledge on plants. After lunch, for History, we watched a clip called the First Australians then had a listening test. Students worked so well we enjoyed a quick game of celebrity heads. We discussed the homework and how important it is to read. Remember sports uniform tomorrow.

Monday
The first day was busy! After a beautiful prayer circle where the class chose a stone and placed it in a bowl of water to represent washing away the past and starting anew, we thought about goals for year four and the type of people we want to be. We welcomed Georgie Roper to the class. Students came up with class room rules then we enjoyed a visit from Mr. Boulton, our year four liaison person. We are privileged to begin the year leading the Liturgy on Monday morning and practised "These Hands" today. Sam even played the guitar for Mr. Boulton. Students enjoyed naming their new stationery.
We talked about what an allergy is and what anaphylaxis is as Maddision suffers from severe reactions to nuts, egg, dairy, fish, shellfish, cockroaches and dust mites. Please be vigilant in making sure there are no nut products in your child's lunch box.
After 'munch and crunch' we set up our homework book and went through the homework which is due this Friday. Please cover your homework book to protect it. We also enjoyed visits from Mrs. McLeish and Mrs. Rowlands to welcome us back to school. We discussed text to text, text to self and text to world connections to help with comprehension.
We talked about Australia Day and completed our own "Coat of Arms". We also started on an Australia Day colouring competition. We would like to enter this as a class so please return your signed permission forms.
Fee information was sent home along with names for the pick up zone.
Congratulations to everyone on a fantastic start to the year!
